The purpose of a Hymenoplasty is to repair and reconstruct the hymen, a thin membrane that partially covers the opening to the vagina.  The Hymen typically tears during the first time a woman has sexual intercourse, and often a small amount of bleeding occurs.  Some women unknowingly tear the hymen through activities such as tampon use, horseback riding, and other rigorous sports.  Some women break their hymen without realizing it.

The desire to undergo a Hymenoplasty is often fueled by cultural, ethnic, or religious motivation.  Women who desire a more satisfactory sexual experience may also opt for a Hymenoplasty, as it results in the tightening of the vaginal walls.
